about me header

Joseph BallardI’m an innovative theatre practitioner with experience as a director, actor and playwright. I am based in Norwich, Norfolk and regularly work in other parts of the UK and London. I’m also a consultant for different organisations in the creative industries; from small arts organisations to International initiatives. This work involves programme development to audience and engagement initiatives to marketing and profile development.

I’m always keen for the next adventure and new projects and collaborations, please contact me to discuss opportunities further.

I graduated from Lancaster University in 2004 (Theatre Studies BA Hons) and have worked across a range of different arts and cultural organisations from charitable bodies, commercial venues and local authorities. Past roles have included London 2012 Inspire Programmer for the East of England, Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Arts North Norfolk and the Atrium Theatre, Director of the Peterborough Festival, Events Director for a city council, founding Artistic Director of March Town Hall Theatre and Arts Courses and marketing and business development consultancy work. I was also privileged to be chosen to represent the UK by the British Council in 2009, on a Young Leaders of the Creative Industries visit to China where we spent time in Shanghai and Xi’an.

In 2017 I relaunched New Stages, my theatre company, to engage with my local community much more than before. New Stages runs North Walsham People’s Choir, North Norfolk Youth Theatre, North Walsham People’s Theatre and a creative welling workshop programme. In October 2017 we launched North Walsham Pop Up People’s Theatre, where we present shows in a town centre location. Almost like a rep company, we have a company of actors and I write, direct and produce the shows.

For 2021, I have headed up Norwich Fringe, for the first Norwich Fringe Festival in 6 years, 18-21 March. -all online this year. Check it out here.

As a theatre practitioner I have produced and directed a number of professional productions and continue my work as an actor and a playwright.
